True joins the magnificent sevenRichard True (Jersey) became the seventh race winner of the season when he won a thrilling round of the 1998 Pirelli Porsche Cup at Donington Park on Sunday (July 19th). By keeping his Porsche Carrera 993 ahead of the Carrera 2s of Robert Babikan (London) and Adrian Slater (Warwickshire), True scored his first ever race win. 'I had to really keep my concentration in the last few laps,' said a jubilant True on the podium. True signalled his intentions by setting the pace in qualifying on Saturday and then claimed pole position in the draw for the top four grid placings. From the start, True just headed the fast-starting Babikan into Redgate Corner while Slater pulled off an even better start to leap from seventh on the grid into third place!
Initially, True was able to extend his lead as Babikan concentrated on fendingoff Slater. However, by mid-race, Babikan was closing the gap to True again and the three cars were running nose-to-tail with four laps to go. 'I was counting on the backmarkers to give me a chance,' said Babikan who got alongside True several times. However, True was determined not to give his lead away and kept his nerve to the flag with his rivals harrying him in a nail-biting finish. 'I really, really enjoyed that,' beamed Slater on the podium.
Not to be outdone by the overall battle, the contests in classes two and threewere equally exciting. Paul Doran nearly made it a double celebration for Jersey and headed class two in his Carrera until the ABS brakes on the 944S2 of Marcus Fothergill (Leeds) came into play later in the race, helping Fothergill to slip ahead. In class three, Adrian Grieves (Durham) bagged
another win in his 944 despite a failing wheel-bearing and the challenge ofseries newcomer Rob Barff (Macclesfield) in another 944. Grieves just managed to grab the lead back on the last lap to keep his overall title bid building.
The Porsche Cup is organised by the Porsche Club (GB) and is supported by

Next round: Donington Park (Leicestershire), Saturday/Sunday August 1st/2nd.
